Product Introduction The Benson class destroyers were built under the 1938 plan as an improved version of the previous class Sims class, and 32 of them were commissioned as 1500-ton class destroyers. Reflecting on the lack of stability caused by the heavy armament of the Sims class, the number of launch tubes was reduced and the engine layout was revised, but the ship still had a top-heavy shape. The first ship, Benson, was commissioned in April 1940.
