She was designed to beat Thermopylae, one of the best and finest clippers ever built. Her mainmast rises 145 feet above deck, and her main yarns extend 78 feet from tip to tip. The Cutty Sark was 400 miles ahead of the Thermopylae and would have crushed her rival if it had not been for the loss of her udder in a gale in the Indian Ocean.
