Designed by the American company McDonnell Douglas and served during the 1960s the F-4 Phantom II two-seater supersonic airport hunter is one of the most well-known and famous aircraft in military aviation history. Initially designed for the U.S.Navy it was also widely used by the U.S. Air Force was a significant commercial success all over the world. The original version destined for the U.S Navy was further improved in 1966 with the productive launch of the Phantom F-4J characterised by the adoption of a weapon system capable of amplifying the operational capacity in the air combat and attack missions on the ground. The avionica was greatly improved and the innovative look-down/shoot-down target control system was adopted. Two new J79-GE 10 engines were also used with a higher boost allowing the Phantom II to exceed the speed of 1240 knots (approximately 2300 km/h). In fact speeds acceleration and reliability were the strengths of the Phantom to offset the reduced manoeuvrability due to its large size.
