(Abbreviation for Landing Vehicle Tracked) are designed to provide the U.S. Armed Forces consisting of Army and Marine Corps a suitable vehicle for amphibious operations with a good level of protection. Often known as Amtrac they were widely used in the Pacific theater of war against the Japanese armed forces but also in the last year of war in the European theater of war. In particular the LVT-4 was a significant improvement over the earlier versions. With the redesign of the project the engine was relocated to the center freeing up the rear part of the vehicle for installing a ramp that allowed quick loading and unloading of light vehicles or small artillery pieces to support the landing troops.
