With the arrival of the sleek Bf109F in Luftwaffe squadrons along the English Channel coast in 1941, the German pilots enjoyed a marked superiority over the RAF's Spitfire Mk.Vbs. The new version had a smoother cowling covering the more powerful 1,200 hp Daimler Benz DB601 engine, a semi retractable tail wheel and wing changes.
